Easy Science

A very large earthquake in India may have killed over 100,000 people!!!

This earthquake was generated by a thrust fault in the Earth's surface only ~ 40 miles long. The magnitude 7.7 quake is making

some scientists think that the same thing could happen in Los Angeles, CA in the USA! There are many short to medium size faults in

the Los Angeles basin. A magnitude 7.7 quake could cause as much damage as a great quake on the large San Andreas fault

that runs from San Diego,  to San Francisco,  then off into the Pacific Ocean. This fault can produce quakes in the 8.5 range on the

Richter Magnitude Scale. San Francisco was destroyed by an 8.3 earthquake on the San Andreas fault in 1906.
