Global Warming-Claims first casualties!!!
New findings in climate changes show Island Country is in danger of being inundated with ocean water! Scientists predicted that areas close to the equator would be the first to show the effects of increased sea levels. The country of Tuvalu in the South Pacific, about 600 MI north of Fiji, is losing land and crops do to rising sea levels. Tuvalu is made up of many small islands and some of them have lost up to 1/3 of their land mass. As average temperatures increase (climate change) large masses of ice melt at the polar regions to cause the sea level to rise. At high tides even the highest areas of some places in Tuvalu are under several feet of sea water. Salt water kills fresh water crops and the high tides erode the beaches around the islands.
What happens if our climate continues this increase in temperature? Low flat countries like Bangladesh already have a big problem with flooding during hurricanes and heavy rain. If this continues these countries, and other coastlines, could disappear completely! We are performing a very, very large experiment with our planet Earth. See the Power Point presentation on the greenhouse effect from the "Science in Action" link on our home page.
